Lyle Shelton, the reality-challenged Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL), after losing the same-sex marriage debate, is now foaming at the mouth about the Victorian Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) legislation, which has just been passed by the Victorian upper house, having been passed by the lower house some time ago.

As one would expect, he is being disingenuous in titling a recent rant “Should Parliamentarians decide which lives are not worth living”, and calling it a “devastating plan to start killing people”. This is typical Shelton, insinuating something which isn’t true and changing the topic to deflect attention from the rights of people to decide for themselves the time and method of their death. Only a person of ‘sound decision-making capacity’1 can opt for assisted dying, so accusing parliamentarians of deciding who dies, is just another lie by the ACL. They cannot help themselves, and despite professing to be Christians, the commandment: “Thou shalt not bear false witness”, apparently means nothing to them. They will lie as much as they deem necessary to get what they want. Their wish is to continue to have the ability to control other people’s lives as much as possible. As we enter the post-Christian era in Australia, the religious are having a desperately difficult time coming to terms with their declining relevance, and the declining number of their acolytes.

Lyle Shelton and his ilk are, as you say, the “reality challenged”.

Which means they believe they are doing god’s work, they are not telling any lies, in fact they believe they are revealing the truth.
