Not so sneaky Lyle Shelton

By January 4, 2021Australian Politics

In previous articles on this site, I have demonstrated Lyle Shelton’s disingenuousness1,2. However, his latest effort takes the cake. On Twitter he posted a few photographs, one of himself, another of an agamid lizard (a water dragon?) and a couple of beach scenes. Accompanying this was:

“Sneaky run across the border and back. Avoided the CCP [Chines Communist Party] virus police.”3

One can only presume this was intended to impress his right-wing nut job mates (the Proud Boys?4) with his apparent defiance of authority. However, someone obviously forwarded this to the Queensland Police, and they replied:

“We are aware of this tweet and making further enquiries”5

Lyle, clearly concerned about this development, replied:

“I was happy to speak with [Queensland Police] today & explain my run along the coast from Coolangatta to the Tweed & back. There were no checkpoints for joggers, walkers or lizards. I have not visited a hotspot. There is a valid debate re borders but I respect the role of our police.”6

He may respect the police, but seemingly not enough to prevent him from linking them to the CCP.

What demonstrates Shelton’s disingenuousness, as if anything else were needed, is the fact that the Queensland Police Commissioner, Katarina Carroll said police had investigated the matter, and spoken to Shelton, and found that he actually had the permit necessary to cross into Queensland, and that there actually was nothing “sneaky” about his run. Commissioner Carroll continued: “It was disappointing to see that tweet; when you see something like we need to put resources into it, which we have. He has been spoken to, he thought it was funny, but it’s not. You’re just taking away resources from other places.”7

Even more telling was what the Queensland police minister, Mark Ryan said, when asked about the tweet he replied: “There’s a saying here: it’s better for people to think you’re an idiot than to open your mouth and confirm it.”7

It is impossible to disagree with that.

Nobody will be surprised that Shelton lied (by omission) to impress his tiny audience of likeminded idiots surely? It’s Twitter after all. The fact that he thinks his post contributed to “valid debate re borders” and couldn’t see that valuable police resources would be wasted investigating his puerile antics simply confirm what many had already concluded about Shelton’s mental acuity. Thankfully the ACT is rid of the bloke.

      Jon,
He is a complete idiot. It is hard to imagine the thought processes going on in his head when he decided to tweet his sneaky trip.
