Marise Payne says Katherine Deves [Liberal candidate for Warringah] remaining as a candidate is matter for the NSW Liberal Party. Actually, no. The party didn’t even get to pick her. This is a matter for Scott Morrison because [Deves] is his handpicked candidate.

Here in the Warringah heartland, a big argument at our place Sunday morning. My wife reckoned ScoMo’s “captain’s pick” for the Liberals’ Warringah candidate is a chook raffle, but I maintained it has all the hallmarks of a full-blown piss-up in a brewery. Meanwhile, Our Zali cruises (we hope) back to her seat in the House of Reps.

      Arthur,
Ronni Salt was of the opinion that, given that Warringah has been written off, Deves was picked solely to appeal to the bigoted religious nutters out in western Sydney. It is a long bow, but Morrison’s game is all about division, so it is possible.

If that’s right, it’s a devious ploy, but who would put anything of that sort past a sleazebag like Morrison? Anyway, grateful for small mercies. Not all that long ago, we thought our electorate would never in a million years elect anyone other than a Liberal – it includes Cremorne Point, all of Mosman, Clontarf, Seaforth, all those posh harbourside mansions you see on the drive down Spit Hill to the Spit Bridge, and many more salubrious locations. Then the Mad Monk, bless him, gave us the exquisite gift of Prince Philip’s knighthood, and most of the Mosman Libs realised he’d gone completely batshit crazy. Enter Zali, stage centre. We love her.

          Arthur,
Zali Steggall has done fairly well. As you say, few could have expected the Liberals to be ejected from Warringah, but Abbott’s idiocy was so profound that he made it possible. I think Warringah is even less likely to vote Liberal now, partly because of Steggall, and partly because the Liberal Party is now a religious right wing rump (which is appropriate given it is partly peopled by arseholes), which is unrecognisable when compared to the Liberal Party of Fraser and his predecessors. So, in taking over the Liberal Party, and in the long run, religious nutjobs may have done us a big favour, by making their nutjobbery and bigotry plain for all to see. This just as the nation becomes less religious and (mostly) more progressive. It seems like the climate and other independents will have a large effect on this election.
